Blood Type

In Naruto, blood types work differently than in the real world — there is no + or −. There are only four known blood types, and they have a heavy influence on a character's main personality traits. Use this guide when developing your OC.

The Four Blood Types in Naruto

Canon character personalities align with these four types. Picking a blood type for your OC can help keep their traits consistent with the series.

Type B

Most characters have this blood type.

Hate to lose; uninhibited; often cheerful, but impulsiveness gets them into trouble.

Examples: Naruto, the Three Sannin, Minato, Suigetsu

Type A

Second most common among characters.

Great fortitude; often fastidious.

Examples: Hinata, Sai, Rock Lee, Shizune

Type AB

Cool-looking but can be aggressive.

Cool exterior; can be aggressive at times.

Examples: Sasuke, Itachi, Karin, Deidara

Type O

Not too many have this blood type.

Usually easygoing and calm.

Examples: Sakura, Kakashi, Iruka, Konan

Japanese Blood Type Personality Theory

In Japan, blood type is often used like zodiac signs elsewhere: people ask about it as a conversation starter, and many believe it hints at personality. The four types are associated with broad stereotypes:

  • Type A (around 40% in Japan): organized, detail-oriented, perfectionist, good in teams; can seem anxious or stubborn.
  • Type B (around 20%): creative, passionate, individualistic; often seen as cheerful and outgoing, sometimes selfish or eccentric.
  • Type AB (around 10%): complex, artistic, rational, adaptable; sometimes viewed as indecisive or mysterious.
  • Type O (around 30%): confident, resilient, natural leaders; outgoing and optimistic, sometimes self-centered or unpredictable.

These associations are cultural belief, not science — studies have not found real links between blood type and personality. In Naruto, the series uses the same four-type system and ties it directly to character traits, so for OC development it's a useful in-universe framework.
