The current Head of the Kazami clan, Emi's older sister and a former ANBU of Konohagakure. She was re-assigned to the general forces as a Jōnin at the beginning of Part I and became the Sensei of Team 9. She was Sayaka Kobayashi's student when she was a Genin and Iruka Umino was one of her teammates. She's a trans woman.

Ran is a relatively tall woman with a slim, lean build. She has long legs, warm light brown skin dusted with freckles, and a pretty face. She's often smiling, but it usually looks vaguely mocking. She likes to keep her bangs short and straight and braids her hair back in a long, thick braid. Her posture and demeanor could be described as ‘lazily confident.’ She didn’t fully transition until her mid teens, but started taking puberty blockers (or the shinobi equivalent) when she was around 11 years old.

She’s very laidback, so her actual, serious orders carry an extra weight to them. She’s the type to make her students/subordinates do the bulk of the job, but they do it knowing she will step in if it gets out of their hands. She can be scary.

Her batto (unsheathing of the sword) is extremely powerful, fast, and highly dangerous. A fight is essentially over when she unsheathes her sword.

Ran was the firstborn child of the head of the Kazami clan, Tsuruo, and his wife, Ruri. The third shinobi world war broke out a few years later, and was in full-swing when she started the academy, at age 6. Her potential didn’t go unnoticed, and Shimura Danzo himself wanted to recruit her for ROOT. Her father refused, but then the Third Hokage also proposed having Ran graduate the Academy early and be put through (regular) ANBU training, which he also refused. He didn’t want his child to have to face the horrors of shinobi life so early.
However, pressure was incredibly high, since Konoha had been suffering too many losses in the war, and eventually Tsuruo (who had suffered a major injury during the previous war) volunteered to go back into active duty to protect Ran. He eventually died in the Third War, before the birth of his second child, Emi.
Tsuruo's will was respected… for a few years. Ran ended up graduating the Academy at nine years old, the year following the Nine-tails' attack on Konoha, alongside Iruka Umino—who became her teammate. Under Sayaka's guidance, Ran found a safe space, and her support became even more crucial to her after her mother passed and she was left to care for her infant sister alone. This was when she first realizes she didn't identify with the gender she was assigned at birth, although she didn't tell a single soul about it.
Ran's talents bloomed and she perfected her control over her Clan's Kekkei Genkai to a point never seen before. After becoming Chunin, several confrontations with Mercenary-nin led to her gaining the monikers “Ran of the Killer Wind” and "Nadegiri," and she was subsequently added to the Bingo Book.
A few months before joining ANBU, at age 13, Ran was present when Sayaka found Shiro as their team was on their way back to Konoha after a mission.
She joined ANBU at age 14 and was placed in Team Ro alongside Itachi Uchiha, with Kakashi as her Captain. While she got along well with him and Tenzō, it was Itachi whom she grew closest to, as they were peers. She considered him a friend, and was extremely shocked when news of the Uchiha Clan Massacre reached her.
After Itachi deserted Konoha, Ran became friends with Azusa and offered her support in becoming the head of a Clan at a very young age, something Ran had also experienced.
