Koguma is derived from kogumaza, the Japanese word for the Ursa Minor constellation. It directly translates to 'small bear'.
Hoshimiya is made up of two kanji; hoshi, meaning 'star' and miya, meaning 'palace'.
A kunoichi of Konohagakure and a member of the Hoshimiya clan.

Throughout Part I she wears a sleeveless red crop top with a high collar and a flared hem lined with black fabric. Beneath that is a brown romper with puffy balloon shorts. The Hoshimiya clan crest — a black circle with a four-pointed star cutout — is placed over her heart. Koguma's arms are covered by mesh sleeves on her forearms and biceps, black elbow pads, and a pair of fingerless gloves. Her shinobi sandals are black with white bandages wrapped around her calves. A brown pouch is strapped to her thigh, more white bandages keep it from directly touching her skin.
Her new outfit is a sleeveless puffy red jacket worn over high-waist black tights. The jacket is cropped right at the waist with a thick silver zipper, a rib knit hem and standing collar, and the Hoshimiya crest over her heart. Koguma still wears her black elbow pads, but in place of the mesh sleeves she instead has bandages around her right forearm and a pair of black gloves with thick cuffs. Her sandals are orange, matching the fabric of her forehead protector.
Her current outfit is a cropped amber jacket with short sleeve trimmings, a high collar, a rib knit hem, and the Hoshimiya crest over her heart. It's unzipped, revealing a red crop top that has a high black collar and hem. Her stomach is protected by a mesh undershirt and Koguma's low-riding black trousers are puffy around the calves. The pant legs are short enough to show the white bandages around her calves and her orange sandals. Koguma's left arm is amputated above the elbow and replaced by a puppet prosthetic. Her right arm has a black elbow pad, mesh forearm sleeve, and fingerless black gloves.
A girl whose natural habitat is the battlefield. She lives for the thrill of the fight — whether she wins or loses — and is always on the lookout for strong opponents to test her skills against. Unfortunately, her thirst for a worthy adversary can leave her rushing into dangerous situations or even abandoning her teammates to target the strongest person in the vicinity.
Koguma is fiercely loyal to her clan and takes great pride in being a Hoshimiya, holding their values close to her heart. Part of this is insisting on a fair fight in any situation. She will never attack an unarmed or incapacitated person and will wait as long as she needs for them to heal or prepare for battle, showing a keen sense of honor.
Koguma's mouth is faster than her mind and offending people is a daily occurrence for her.
Despite claiming to be the most strong-willed woman in Konoha, Koguma is far from unflappable and the mere presence of a beautiful woman can be enough to throw her off her game.
