The Hoshimiya clan is old enough that their true origins have been lost to history. Folklore says that they came from space, arriving on Earth by riding on a shooting star, but very few believe there's any truth in the story.
During the Warring States period they quickly gained a reputation for sheer brutality, considered excessive even during an era of intense violence and war.
As the years went on and the first hidden village was founded, the Hoshimiya had changed dramatically. They had fragmented over time and become scattered all throughout the world, with a particularly large offshoot ending up in the Land of Whirlpools. They were still aggressive, still territorial, but now willing to negotiate with other clans and settlements.
After the fall of Uzushio the Hoshimiya who'd settled there would reunify with the main clan in Konoha.

Children born into the clan are named after constellations, with it being taboo to have multiple clan members with the same name. If this does happen, the two children are not allowed to interact as it's believed to bring bad luck.
The title of clan head is not inherited but earned. Anyone with Hoshimiya blood can be a candidate, but they must prove themself as a powerful warrior first. This means engaging in a series of duels with their fellow clansmen. Historically these fights led to the death of at least one combatant. In the modern era all participants are expected to show restraint.
The Hoshimiya Clan's kekkei touta is typically only taught to prospective clan heads due to how dangerous it is and how taxing it can be on the user's body.
Approximately 1 in 500 births result in babies born with star-shaped pupils. This mutation can affect one or both eyes and is a genetic trait unique to the Hoshimiya. Culturally, starry-eyed children have been viewed as a blessing from the gods and a sign of great fortune. The belief is taken less seriously nowadays, no more than a fascinating novelty, but older generations often insist on throwing a large celebration to uphold traditions.
