Economy
Currency, trade, missions, and resources in the shinobi world.
Ryō (両)
The ryō (両) is the currency used in the Naruto world. It’s based on an old Japanese gold coin used before the Meiji period.
Canon exchange rate: 1 ryō = 10 yen. Because this ties ryō to real-world currency, it can also be converted to other modern fiat currencies (e.g., USD) through the yen.
Canon examples (prices & sums)
- Bounties: Asuma Sarutobi’s bounty is stated as 35,000,000 ryō (with other bounties and ransoms in the tens to hundreds of millions of ryō also being mentioned).
- Missions: Shinobi generally earn money via mission rewards; ranks scale from low-paying D-rank work up through S-rank assignments.
- Note: Some locations may visually imply different currency conventions (e.g., a cheque shown with a “$” sign in a film), but ryō remains the standard currency referenced in-series.
Mission ranks & fees
Mission fees are commonly cited by rank. (The USD amounts are only a modern visualization via yen.)
D-rank
Assigned to genin fresh from the Academy. Almost no risk; typically odd jobs (farming, babysitting, etc.).
5,000–50,000 ryō (≈ $500–$5,000)
C-rank
Assigned to experienced genin or chūnin. Low chance of shinobi combat; guarding against bandits, investigations, capturing thieves, or suppressing wild animals.
30,000–100,000 ryō (≈ $3,000–$10,000)
B-rank
Assigned to experienced chūnin. Anticipated to involve combat with other ninja; guarding, espionage, or taking down shinobi targets.
80,000–200,000 ryō (≈ $8,000–$20,000)
A-rank
Assigned to jōnin. Often tied to village/state-level matters and trends; guarding VIPs or suppressing enemy forces.
150,000–1,000,000 ryō (≈ $15,000–$100,000)
S-rank
Assigned to experienced jōnin. State-level confidential matters; assassinations, highly classified transport, etc.
1,000,000+ ryō (≈ $100,000+)
Village economy & population (fanbook ratings)
The databooks/fanbooks use simplified “x/5” ratings for high-level comparisons rather than exact statistics.
Economic strength
- Kumogakure: 5/5
- Konohagakure: 2/5
- Sunagakure: 2/5
- Iwagakure: 2/5
- Kirigakure: 2/5
Population
- Konohagakure: 5/5
- Iwagakure: 4/5
- Kumogakure: 3/5
- Kirigakure: 2/5
- Sunagakure: 2/5
What we know vs. what we don’t
What we know
- Currency name: ryō is the standard currency referenced.
- Exchange rate: 1 ryō = 10 yen (canon).
- Mission pay: rewards scale by mission rank; broad ranges are given.
- Relative comparisons: village economy/population are rated on a 5-point scale.
What we don’t know
- Exact GDP/economy sizes: no hard numbers for village or nation economies.
- Exact population counts: only relative ratings are provided.
- Work calendar: business days/holidays aren’t defined for the setting.
The exchange-rate problem
If you take 1 ryō = 10 yen literally and map yen to modern USD, low-rank mission rewards can appear extremely high for simple labor (e.g., “find a pet” style D-ranks). This creates a mismatch between stated payouts and the everyday-feel of the setting.
There’s no single canon fix offered in the source material; for roleplay balance, communities often treat the exchange rate as lore flavor rather than a strict modern purchasing-power conversion.
