Fire Release
Katon · 火遁
Chakra kneaded into fire, used for offensive flame techniques, heat, and explosions. Strong against Wind, weak against Water.
Nature transformation, the five elements, Yin–Yang, and combined releases — with Narutopedia links on each card.
At a glance
Nature transformation (性質変化, seishitsu henka) is advanced chakra control: you mould what the chakra is—its element or Yin/Yang quality. Shape transformation (形体変化) is the other half of most techniques: the form and movement of the jutsu. Elemental techniques are usually called “X Release” (遁, ton; English TV often “Style”).
Below: the five basic natures (and their strength loop), Yin and Yang for non-elemental work, then combined releases made by using two or three basics at once (typically kekkei genkai or kekkei tōta). Use the pills to jump. Each card links to Narutopedia where available; “Combined from” lists fusion ingredients when we store them.
The five elemental affinities—Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Water—and how they interact.
The Five Basic Natures (五大基本性質) are the foundation of elemental ninjutsu. In a clash at similar power, the stronger nature wins: Fire beats Wind, Wind beats Lightning, Lightning beats Earth, Earth beats Water, Water beats Fire. A higher-level technique can still overpower a weaker one despite the cycle.
Most people have an affinity toward one element; affinity can run in clans (e.g. many Uchiha toward Fire). Jōnin commonly master two. Learning all five is possible but rare—most shinobi are naturally weaker with elements outside their affinity.
Katon · 火遁
Chakra kneaded into fire, used for offensive flame techniques, heat, and explosions. Strong against Wind, weak against Water.
Fūton · 風遁
Chakra given wind nature—cutting pressure, vacuums, and aerial control. Strong against Lightning, weak against Fire.
Raiton · 雷遁
Chakra shaped into electricity for piercing strikes, paralysis, and high-speed techniques. Strong against Earth, weak against Wind.
Doton · 土遁
Chakra that shapes earth and stone—walls, tunnels, and weighted attacks. Strong against Water, weak against Lightning.
Suiton · 水遁
Chakra that manipulates water—jets, mist, and large-scale torrents. Strong against Fire, weak against Earth.
Non-elemental natures: Yin Release, Yang Release, and Yin–Yang Release together.
Besides the five elements, Yin Release (陰遁, inton) draws on imagination and spiritual energy; Yang Release (陽遁, yōton) on vitality and physical energy. Together they form Yin–Yang Release (陰陽遁). These underlie many non-elemental techniques—shadow and body arts, genjutsu, medical ninjutsu, and more—not “elements” in the same sense as fire or water.
Inton · 陰遁
Spiritual energy that shapes form from nothingness—used with Yang for creation and with genjutsu-like applications.
Yōton · 陽遁
Physical energy that breathes life into form; complements Yin in techniques such as the Creation of All Things.
Onmyōton · 陰陽遁
Simultaneous Yin and Yang manipulation—foundation of Six Paths techniques and truth-seeking orbs.
Using two basic natures at once to create a new elemental nature—often through bloodline.
By moulding two basic natures simultaneously, you get a combined nature with its own properties (e.g. Wood or Mud Release from Earth + Water—different bloodlines—Ice from Water + Wind). Canon usually ties this to kekkei genkai; those with the right lineage carry chakra suited to both elements. Other kekkei genkai (dōjutsu, etc.) are not the same thing and are not what this table lists.
Cards show “Combined from” when we store the mix. Such techniques generally cannot be copied like standard ninjutsu.
Mokuton · 木遁
Combines Earth and Water to create living wood and forests; famously associated with Hashirama Senju.
Deiton · 泥遁
Combines Earth and Water into mud-based techniques—distinct from Wood Release despite the same components. Introduced in the novel Akatsuki Hiden: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom; extremely rare.
Yōton · 溶遁
Combines Earth and Fire to produce molten rock, corrosive quicklime, or rubber-like lava depending on the user.
Ranton · 嵐遁
Combines Lightning and Water into energy beams that flow like water and can be guided like lightning.
Futton · 沸遁
Combines Fire and Water to produce corrosive mist or highly pressurized steam.
Hyōton · 氷遁
Combines Wind and Water into ice—structures, weapons, and freezing effects.
Jiton · 磁遁
Combines Wind and Earth to generate magnetic forces—often shaping chakra into positive and negative poles.
Shakuton · 灼遁
Combines Fire and Wind to create orbs that desiccate targets, mummifying what they touch.
Taiton · 颱遁
A rare kekkei genkai that shapes chakra into extreme windstorms and typhoon-scale gales—distinct from ordinary Wind Release. Associated with Nowaki in the anime.
Bakuton · 爆遁
Combines Earth and Lightning to infuse matter with explosive chakra—often clay or touch-based detonations.
Jinton · 迅遁
Extreme movement at speeds that resemble teleportation; component natures are not stated in canon material.
Shōton · 晶遁
Creates and manipulates crystalline structures—often pink crystals used for offense, defense, and traps.
Kōton · 鋼遁
Hardens part of the body into black steel; notably used by Hiruko in Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire.
Meiton · 冥遁
Absorbs, manipulates, and releases chakra-based techniques through a marking on the palm.
Enton · 炎遁
Manipulates black flames (Amaterasu); wielders shape fire that ordinarily cannot be extinguished.
Three basic natures fused at once—rarer than a two-element kekkei genkai.
Kekkei tōta requires using three basic transformations together (e.g. Dust Release: Fire, Earth, and Wind). It is far less common than two-nature combinations; treat it as a top tier of rarity for OCs and stories.
Jinton · 塵遁
Kekkei tōta combining Earth, Wind, and Fire. Disintegrates targets into dust at a molecular scale within a three-dimensional structure.
