Yayoi is a Japanese name and the traditional word for the month of March.
Higanbana is the common name for lycoris radiata, also known as the red spider lily.
Yayoi is a young girl, the second oldest of the Higanbana sisters, and a kunoichi of Konohagakure despite having deformed chakra coils.
Yayoi has fair skin, teal blue eyes, and blonde hair tied in two low, loose pigtails with her bangs swept to the side. She has two beauty marks, one beneath her eye and the other next to her lip. She wears a yellow qi-pao dress with slits up the side and a high collar with a zipper over a white shirt with long bell sleeves and a pair of black bike shorts.
Her shuriken holster is around her right thigh. Yayoi's shinobi sandals are black and she wears a black cat-eared hat, which is what the plate of her forehead protector is attached to.
Yayoi's blonde hair is now cut into a bob with her bangs swept to the side and small locks of hair flicking out. She has two beauty marks, one beneath her eye and the other next to her lip. She wears a short yellow kimono with white haneri, a plan yellow and cream obi sash, and long flared sleeves. The right side of the kimono is decorated with a cream-colored cherry blossom pattern. Beneath her outfit is a black shirt and a pair of matching tight shorts.
Her fingerless gloves and her shinobi sandals are both black. Bandages are wrapped around her right thigh with a small brown pouch strapped on top. She wears a black cat-eared hat, which is what the plate of her forehead protector is attached to. Yayoi also has a couple of healed scars on her legs.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War she wears the standard Konoha flak jacket over a long-sleeved shirt and black pants.

Most who meet Yayoi would describe her as unassuming, quiet, forgettable. These observations aren't wholly inaccurate, but they aren't totally accurate either. Yayoi is incredibly driven, putting her health on the line to prove that she can be a shinobi, that being disabled doesn't mean she has to fade away into the background in fear of being a burden on others.
She loves a good puzzle and is a natural problem-solver at heart, this carries onto every aspect of her life. "Failure" doesn't really exist to Yayoi, there is always an alternate solution and she won't give up until she either figures it out or someone intervenes. This way of thinking allows her to remain optimistic in seemingly hopeless situations, though it also means she struggles to accept that not everything or everyone is salvageable.
Her motto is fall down seven times, stand up eight.

Below average, forcing Yayoi to be very conservative with her chakra and think through every chakra-consuming technique she uses in battle.
Higher than expected for her condition... which is to say it's still below average. She has tried and failed to improve it, but thankfully her fuuinjutsu does not require insane amounts of control.
Though not the strongest combatant Yayoi can hold her own in hand-to-hand combat, having learned taijutsu to help make up for her lack of ninjutsu skills.
Kaku Suzaku and Tenten are two of her biggest influences.
Yayoi was one of the highest-performing students in her class, at least when it came to the theory portions of the curriculum. Practical exams? Physical training? It's a miracle she didn't get held back.
Yayoi's priority is to incapacitate her opponent expeditiously. She achieves this by setting fuuinjutsu traps and using her Chakra Suppression Technique to remain undetected.
Area control and incapacitating enemies are her specialties. It's her job to turn opponents into sitting ducks for Ashi and Hotaru to strike.
Evasion and stealth all the way. Yayoi is smart enough to know she'll struggle in any fight that isn't a one-on-one with someone on her level, so instead she'll retreat.

She is incredibly proficient at sealing. Yayoi has spent countless hours and suffered many sleepless nights researching and refining her seals. Yayoi focuses on trapping and incapacitating her opponents so that her teammates can attack head on.
Yayoi's chakra intolerance makes her much more sensitive to the presence of chakra than other shinobi, even fellow sensor-types. As a result, she doesn't even need to be kneading chakra in order to pick up on other people's signatures.

Yayoi was born to Yabun and Hiruma Higanbana—a retired kunoichi and a pharmacist respectively—as the second oldest of four daughters. It was quickly discovered that Yayoi had a birth defect; deformed chakra coils. More specifically, her coils are undersized and her pathways are misaligned. As a result of this deformity, she was left suffering from chronic pain that can be managed but not cured.
She was housebound for the first couple years of her life until she grew stronger and could tolerate being out and about in the village.
Yayoi has idolized her older sister Mutsuki for as long as she can remember; Mutsuki was strong, intelligent, and constantly told she would be an amazing kunoichi, all things that Yayoi wanted too.

Yayoi's deformed chakra coils are a direct analogy for chronic illness and disability. Furthermore, her insistence on pushing through the pain even as it tears her apart is reminiscent of how many disabled people feel pressured to to the same in fear of being judged as "lazy".
The original concept for Yayoi was a reincarnation self insert. She has moved far past that, but her disability is one of the things that survived the numerous rewrites. During this stage of development her chakra sensitivity was a side affect of her reincarnation.
