Background

Childhood

Akio Sanada was born to Meguri Sanada (formerly Yamanaka) and Takashi Sanada. However, very early in Akio's youth, Takashi passed away and before he knew it, Meguri had moved on and gotten with a man named Manabu Tamura, who just so happened to despite Akio and took every chance he could to hurt the young boy, all the while Meguri turned a blind eye to what was going on.

Adolescence

During his days in the Academy, Akio grew close to Shiori Aragaki. While there, he also gained an interest in history and made it his goal to eventually become Hokage in the future. Due to his friendship with Shiori, she managed to convince her father into intimidating Manabu and stopping some of the worst abuse at home for Akio, which only endeared him closer to Shiori. As such, he also gained her mutual disdain for Sayato Yasuda.

However, him, Shiori, and Sayato were all placed upon the same genin team (lead by Romio Uchiha) much to their dismay. While on occasion, he would try to shield Sayato from some of Shiori's harshness, he more often than not took her side in scuffles on the basis of his loyalty to her.

A week prior to the chunin exams, Team Romio is ambushed by 2 Kiri-Nin on what they thought would be a small D-rank lost pet rescue mission. The three kids split off into different directions, but ultimately Sayato is caught and pushed into killing Akio.
