When Mitsuo was 5, his mother was presumed dead after an earthquake in the mountains during a mission. Not wanting to remain in the Land of the Earth without his mom, Mitsuo ran away. After days of travel, a team of Konoha shinobi found him and took him to Konoha, hoping to find him a better life. Ever since, he's felt completely at home in the Hidden Leaf Village.

Overall, Mitsuo is a kind shinobi with a sense of humor. He tries to make people smile and he uses humor as a coping mechanism. For most of his childhood and teen years, he was very uncomfortable with his body to the point he would bind his chest with wrappings as tightly as he could manage. Unfortunately, he almost damaged his lungs by doing this. He's stubborn, though.

Growing up, Mitsuo never really felt as though he belonged with the clan. Between a very absent mother and being bounced from aunt to uncle to cousin, he felt lost and lonely. When his mother 'died', he left the clan as fast as he could. On his way back to Konoha, he found himself in a sticky situation where he almost got killed. Much to his relief, a beloved yellow-haired shinobi saved him and offered to take him back to Konoha. When they got back, Mitsuo was shocked to find out the man who saved him was none other than the fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, who set him up with everything he needed to live in the village and become a shinobi.
