Zodiac Temple

Overview

When Hamura Ōtsutsuki saw that his brother had "blessed" humans with chakra, he worried that humans would recreate his mother's mistakes and reach for power they could not control. Or worse - release her from her seal.
His solution was similar to Hagoromo's creation of the Tailed Beasts. Hamura gathered the traces of chakra the war with Kaguya had left behind, and shaped it into animal-like forms. Taking inspiration from the stars, he created what were later referred to as the Celestial Beasts.

A Celestial Beast is a sentience (or, as they prefer to be referred to, a soul) in the shape of a large pearl. Unlike the Tailed Beasts, the Celestial Beasts are not beings of vast chakra, and those who are bonded to them do not draw on the Beasts' chakra to perform powerful jutsu. Instead, the Celestial Beasts help to guide and shape their respective human's chakra, allowing for extreme precision in the amount of chakra used and ninjutsu that is more advanced than the user would normally be able to create themself.

The Celestial Beasts choose a human based on their birth year and chakra nature, binding their chakra with an oath sealed in blood. The oath itself can be varied from person to person, but there are some requirements that exist no matter what:

  • the Disciple cannot be the one to start a fight (though they can finish one)
  • the Disciple cannot knowingly start wars or conflicts between other humans

The first twelve humans to bind to the Celestial Beasts combined their ninjutsu to create a small island complete with a classically-styled temple estate just a few miles east of what was once the Land of Tidepools, and named themselves the Zodiac Temple.

Though the organization is not well-known among everyday members of villages (both shinobi and civilian), most world leaders are aware of their existence. Because of their oath not to start fights, they are often hired as diplomatic escorts and messengers between nations.

In recent years, the Zodiac Temple has earned more of a reputation by taking a direct role in peace negotiations between nations, notably the negotiations that ended the Third Shinobi War. They are generally viewed as trustworthy and wise, though some of the current members had bloody reputations prior to joining the Temple that makes various Kages hesitant to trust them.

Indra Ōtsutsuki is said to have designed and named the twelve basic hand-seals based on the twelve Celestial Beasts.
