Though they hesitate to call themselves a clan - with no clan leader and only two living generations - the Atae "family", as they more commonly refer to themselves, began making a name for themselves during the Third Great Ninja War as four of its members became feared ninja.

The first generation of the Ataes was born at the end of the Second Great Ninja War, and the name began to appear in bingo books during the Third War. What confused - and often frightened - the Hidden Villages of the world was that the name seemed to be cropping up everywhere.
As their names spread, the truth of the Atae childrens' parenthood came to light; six children in total, all with the same father but none with the same mother.
When Yuu Atae and Tsubame Atae met in battle, they nearly killed each other. A few months later, they stood side-by-side as Sunagakure and Konohagakure forged the first "real" alliance of the Third Ninja War.
As the war wore down to smaller skirmishes, two new Atae names appeared; Hanzo and Jin, the newest members of the respected but often forgotten Zodiac Temple, traveling together and using the Temple's neutrality between villages as a means of brokering peace talks between nations.
Over the years, all six of the Atae children have converged on the Zodiac Temple, taking up six of the available 12 Zodiac Disciple positions. All of them travel now, trying to keep the peace that followed the Third Ninja War.

straying from the expected path
There is a rumor that Nobuyuki's mother was an Uchiha banished from her clan, and his father was a Hyuga visiting the brothel she worked in. This will later be confirmed in (fanfic) canon, though only one or two people outside of the family will be told.
The members of the Atae family love each other dearly but don't actually know one another all that well. They spent most of their lives separated by villages and obligations, particularly those four that were shinobi. Tsubame, in particular, is not well-known by her siblings.
