Rites and customs

The Kobayashi clan is split into two branches, labelled the Hana and Kuki (茎) branches. The Kuki branch have traditionally acted as bodyguards for the Hana branch; the stem that holds up the flower so that it may bloom. Those in the Hana branch are named after various flora and those in the Kuki branch are named after trees.

Kobayashi weddings are notoriously over-the-top, often lasting multiple days and costing obscene amounts of money.

When a member of the Kobayashi clan dies they are returned to the earth. This is achieved by wrapping the deceased's body in a shroud that is patterned with their namesake before burying them. The lack of a coffin speeds up decomposition and feeds the soil around them.
