A medium-sized clan that is centralized in Konohagakure but has spread all throughout the Land of Fire. They're best known for offering spiritual services, such as divination and fortune telling.

The women in the clan wear heavy make-up from a young age. Little girls start with white foundation and a single red stripe on their bottom lip, while adult women will add powder around their eyes and cheeks and markings on their foreheads.

Legend says that the Choubei clan began with a blind shrine maiden who was born during the Warring States Period, an era defined by relentless conflict and bloodshed. The shrine maiden had an unusually strong connection with the afterlife and her abilities became a source of conflict within her tiny village, with some believing she was cursed and others revering her as the mouthpiece of their ancestors. She predicted plagues and poor harvests, spoke of times and events she never lived through, all in undecipherable riddles that she wouldn't (or couldn't) translate. The clan's characteristic cryptic speech is said to be an echo of her own.
Word of the shine maiden's abilities spread quickly and before long all manner of people sought her out for blessings, begged her to read their fates, or wished to learn from her.

Upon reaching adulthood clan members are gifted a red rope.
All women within the clan wear heavy make-up.
Clan members are considered adults at 16, at which point they are gifted a long red rope weaved by clan elders in recognition of their new status. It is expected that they will integrate the rope into their outfits in some way, usually as a belt.
It is considered taboo and inappropriate for them to be bare-faced around any man who isn't a direct relative. Their husbands will see them without make-up on their wedding day.
Once a Choubei girl is old enough to wear make-up it becomes taboo and inappropriate for her to be bare-faced around any man who isn't a direct relative (such as a father, brother, uncle, first cousin, or son). The first time a man will see her without make-up is on their wedding day, where he will help her wash away the make-up.
The ideal Choubei woman is said to be like silk, delicate in appearance but strong enough to endure.
The clan is matriarchal, having been led by women from the beginning and it is tradition that the clan head dyes her teeth black, a practice known as ohaguro.
Children within the clan are given names ending in "ko" for girls and "hiko" for boys. On their first birthday a ritual called erabitori is performed where a series of items are placed in front of the child, whatever they are drawn to first is supposed to indicate their calling in life; a lackadaisical child will pick a toy, a spiritual child will pick juzu beads, a cultured child will pick the bells, etc.
