The Yamashita are a reclusive martial clan originating from the northern mountain range between the borders of the Land of Storms and the Land of Reeds; they eventually aligned themselves with Amegakure just before the Second Ninja War.
In the past, they aspired to break their limitations via experimental chakra overload until they discovered a means to expand their senses by damaging the meridian between their brows in a very specific way. The practice was lost over time as it developed into a genetic disposition, leading to the acute sensory ability they have today.

A gathering of budding martial artists came together as a community in attempts to reverse engineer a technique ninja combatants called Sage Mode, not realizing that this is usually achieved through having an affinity with nature or the teachings of a summoning contract with senjutsu training.
They traveled across the as of yet unnamed country of Arashi no Kuni and settled at the base of the northern mountain range, aptly naming the territory Kiritani due to the obscuring mist. It was the perfect location for people aspiring to be one with nature. For a few generations they proceeded to isolate themselves from the world, the community made ties and became a family and collectively settled on the name Yamashita in honor of the area that became their home.
They lost many members over the years due to early experiments of overloading their chakra meridians in various ways (anywhere from debilitating to lethal), slowly improving with time until they found a fine balance that could expand the sense of their surroundings at the cost of only damaging the meridian behind their eyes. This practice was lost over time as it developed into a genetic disposition and in a way, they end up achieving their goal for a price.
The Yamashita had partially succeeded in their aspirations, and became the equivalent of a "half-sage". Their sensory ability allows them to perpetually percieve natural energy - making them some of the most acute sensors in existence - but because of their "shortcut", their bodies can no longer retain the energy necessary to achieve Sage Mode.
Increasing border skirmishes between Grass and Rain put a threat on their livelihood and trade. The Yamashita reached out to Ame due to rumors of Kusa's poor treatment of refugees and made a deal: A portion of their family would remain behind, determined to defend their home but the rest would pledge their service to Amegakure in exchange for supplies, resources, and defending their territory if necessary. Unfortunately, the border skirmishes became minor in comparison to the devastation of what soon became known as the Second Shinobi War.
The Yamashita quickly rose through the ranks; the acute awareness of their surroundings at all times made them exceptional for surveillance and security - something Hanzo valued greatly throughout his leadership.

The devastation of multiple war leads Hanzo to abandon his ideals of Peace in exchange for Power. Hanzo's mental and physical health take a plunge; corruption and paranoia has him trusting in no one, much less the security he formerly had faith in - and their esteemed leader became a Tyrant. In spite of this, the Yamashita continue their assigned duties as effectively as they can. The Yamashita had made a home in Amegakure, and did not wish to lose it.
lorem ipsum - The Yamashita have clear suspicions of Danzo's involvement and the death of "Iwa" ninjas. Hanzo ignores their warnings, and things get out of hand.
During Pain's coup, those that were personally guarding Hanzo were indiscriminately killed but the Yamashita's persistent ability to track Pain's movements (even if they had failed to counter him) had impressed the man enough to offer sparing the rest of their clan, upon the condition that their loyalty to Amegakure transferred to himself rather than the man Hanzo had become - acknowledging their leader's deterioration, they reluctantly agreed.
Their longstanding service to Hanzo and being spared by Pain becomes a double edged sword. The clan’s reputation takes a major hit. The populace blames the Yamashita for supporting Hanzo during his tyranny while loyalists blame them for changing sides with Pain’s takeover. The clan’s agreement to Amegakure is rediscussed, they lose their foothold in village politics - some moving back to Kiritani while others are demoted to general village security and border patrols.
In spite of the new adjustments, it becomes inevitable that the Yamashita detect unusual movements into and out of Amegakure. They had been alarmed at the sudden appearance of a member they later learned was called “Obito”, after having alerted the village of the infiltration. This has Pain interrogating them thoroughly about their sensory ability and issuing an explicit threat that they are told not to look into or discuss Akatsuki business - they quickly learn which chakra signatures are given “exceptions”.
Yamashita's ability became a direct influence and kickstarted the invention of Pain’s Rain Tiger at Will Technique, feeling it necessary to monitor the village while he was away in hopes of no more surprises.

lorem ipsum - System Collapse. Constant fights for succession has the village becoming a refuge for ronin and mercanaries (more than before) rather than being a proper ninja village - the Yamashita take a step back. Takes years for the village to stabilize and find proper leadership.
The Yamashita generally assign whoever shows the most promise in sensory ability, as education in politics can come later. However the position itself can be challenged at any time, whether it's to test one's competency or pushing for a new candidate entirely.
