Quiet perseverance
I (creator) come from an ethnically Jewish family, though not raised religious. The Miyazaki family is based on my tenuous connections with that part of my heritage, and the family heirloom sword's story is based on Hanukkah, because it was the only Jewish holiday my family still celebrated when I was young.
The family name 'Miyazaki' was chosen both because I am a big Studio Ghibli fan, and because the name's characters refer to a (Shinto) shrine located on a cape or promontory, and the association of a body of water and a religious/spiritual location felt appropriate.
