Fanon · by spyderwoman
A clan of the Land of Wind who are loosely affiliated with Sunagakure. The Kofun clan has always been small and more of guardians than shinobi. They’re known by most villages as fierce protectors— and to actually meet one in battle is risking being cursed for life. They’re known as the protectors and caretakers of the dead— and their resting places. Those who know the Kofun’s history, as well, call them the chosen of the Wind Sage.
Grave attendants. The Kofun have tended to the dead of The Land of Wind since the desert rose up. Within Sunagakure they do the same.

Legends state that a great sage of the past brought chakra and ninjutsu to the nomads of the desert. That they traveled the hot, dry land and brought a cool wind with them everywhere they went. They were called The Wind Sage and the country would later be named for them.
The Wind Sage, however, did not travel alone. Ancient stories say they had a family with them— one led by a dark haired, dark eyed woman who could summon vultures at a call. This woman, the Wind Sage’s consort, traveled with them and gave the sage at least five children. (So the stories go.) So dedicated to the Sage she was that when the Sage died— the woman refused to leave their side.
Kofun history knows this woman as Itamu— the first. The mother of their clan. The lover of the Great Wind Sage— and the woman who refused to leave his side. Her children, teenagers at the time, refused to leave her as well— and instead built a home around her and their dead parent.
Other mounds grew around it with time— clan heads and historical figures all clamoring to be buried there. And from this the Kofun Clan came to be. The home was built up around the dead— and as years went on they became the guardians of the dead and all their rites.
The Kofun have guarded the mounds since the sage was buried. Through the threat of grave robbers and wars—- they’ve stayed put. They’re known for their steadfast loyalty and dedication— and for their sharp blades and sharp attacks.
It was when Sunagakure was founded and they began their own burials that the village reached out to the Kofun— requesting some to come and watch the village’s graves. From here the family grew.
Now, in modern times, the clan is split. But their duty remains the same. They tend to the dead of The Land of the Wind— and anyone who dies within its borders.
Matriarchal. Only women in the Head line can inherit. They must also have a summoning contract.

The Kofun clan, unlike many clans outside of the Land of Wind, is matriarchal. The Head of the Clan is a woman— and her children and grandchildren make up the heirs. In their society a man cannot pass on the name—- so a man can never be the head.
The Kofun, as a general practice, do not marry. Because of this they do not have a family name in the traditional sense either—- as is common in the Land of the Wind. The founder of the clan, Itamu, was given the moniker “no Kofun” (of the burial mounds) when she settled. The nickname was gifted to her daughter and then granddaughter —- and so forth and so forth.
Hierarchy in the clan, however, is not achieved just by birth. Adoption is common and many of the clan heads were adopted by the previous head. It’s important that the heir to the clan— and the head both— are not shinobi tied to Sunagakure or any village. The only loyalty they should have is to the clan and the protecting the dead.
Each clan member is taught how to leave food, gifts, and other things on graves. How to set up barrier circles around the oldest mounds to prevent robberies. How to listen for any sound that could be off.
As a coming of age ceremony every child is given a chance to sign a summoning contract as well. Those in the Sunagakure branch are given the option of jackals— while those in the desert itself are asked to sign with vultures. Not everyone is accepted— but those who are can be seen as potential heirs.
Finally, when a Kofun dies they are not buried. Instead they are cremated— and their ashes are scattered amongst the desert sand. The Kofun believe, this way, they can protect the souls who were lost in the desert and never found— and help guide their families even after their death.

The Wind Sage is a daughter of Kaguya.
They’re not known much outside of the Land of Wind. Those who do know of them consider them old fashioned and creepy. Morbid. Inside the Land of Wind they’re thought to be above it all— almost divine. Strange also isn’t unthought of.
The clan as a whole are also rumored to have eyes and ears everywhere—- within the scavengers of the desert. Those who die in the sand with no one around are rumored to be found and brought to the Kofun.
The desert branch is known for summoning vultures. The Sunagakure branch is known for summoning jackals. Sensor nins are also very common in the clan.
The Kofun are notorious for setting traps. They use wire sharp enough to cut skin— needles laced in poison— and sealing tags hiding pits at their homes. In the wild, however, they more well known for said their summons to track people for days. They have an insane amount of stamina and will hunt others down until they’re exhausted.
The weapons the Kofun tend to use are bows and arrows, wire, senbon needles, mambele, and khopesh.
