Fanon · by gay(may)flowers
A clan known for their bear summons and partnership with bears. A friendly, affable clan that makes up most of the construction workers in Konoha. Beyond their bears they're also known for their brute strength and their berserker state they can enter in battle.
Primary
Construction workers & forest guardians. Thanks to their natural strength they’ve become the backbone of keeping the village repaired and built. And thanks to their partnership with bears— they can patrol the forests outside of Konoha and ward off anyone with bad intentions.

The clan was founded years ago— long before Konoha was ever formed. Legend states that their founder was an abandoned child who was discovered by the ancient bears. These mythical creatures took in the founder and brought her to their land— where they raised her amongst them. When she reached the age of an adult she left to find others like her— and returned to the Land of Fire. Here she started a family and the clan truly formed.
During the founding of Konoha, Oki Kumako, the clan head at the time, was approached to help build the village. He agreed as long as they were given a large clan compound near the forest and promised protection by the village itself.
Since then the clan has produced most of the construction workers for the village as well as shinobi known for their brute strength. They’ve become well known for their affable, friendly personalities and are the only ones in Konoha with a summoning contract with bears— mostly grizzly. The clan very rarely produces high ranking shinobi amongst Konoha— but they are the backbone of helping keeping the village built and strong.

The Kumako clan is split into two distinct branches. The main branch is the one involved in politics within Konoha and the clan itself. The secondary branch is reserved for civilians only. They stay out of day to day clan politics and the politics within the village— instead focusing on their jobs and each other.
Shinobi, however, are all part of the main branch. Even if you were born to civilian parents once you graduate from the academy you become part of the main branch of the clan.
Every shinobi of the clan, once they graduate, go through a ritual marking them as part of the main branch as well as soldiers of the clan. The head of the clan, under the guidance the head of the bear summons, scars each genin’s face individually to mark them as a soldier and member of the main branch.
It’s a ritual involving the clan’s bear claw jutsu— and the number of claw marks they receive also designates their place in the clan. Three claw marks designate them as a standard shinobi. Four as a member of the head family and five claw marks are reserved purely for the head of the clan and the chosen heir.
After this graduation ceremony, once the shinobi is officially a genin, they are given a chance to sign the family contract. This is a high honor. If accepted they are expected to be assigned a personal bear summon-- one who will live with them for the rest of their life. Both heads of the clan will cut the chosen's pad or palm and then perform a jutsu-- linking them forever. If one dies-- so does the other. This ritual also allows the human shinobi to borrow traits from their companion as needed. It's the clan member's duty from then on to care for the summon for life.
