Himeko is a strong-willed person who doesn't fear speaking her mind. It takes her time to open up and fully trust people, but she's very caring, deep down. She has a very strong sense of justice (which can verge into self-righteousness sometimes) and she hates bullies and people who abandon their friends. Even though she's almost always frowning, she isn't constantly grumpy. That's just her default expression. A bit of a tsundere.

Himeko became friends with Ino right after they started attending the Academy, and later befriended Sakura. The three of them were inseparable as kids, until Sakura and Ino got into a big fight over Sasuke Uchiha and ended their years-long friendship. Awkwardly caught in the middle, Himeko tried to keep being friends with both of them, even if separately, and they got mad at her for being a "two-timer". Her last year at the Academy was quite lonely.
Because of her height and build, broader and bigger than all the other girls in her class and even most boys, she got teased often by the boys, and she always clapped back. For a brief time, there was a running "joke" that paired her up with Choji Akimichi, which mortified her (but not for the reasons she assumed.) She's hated boys ever since.
Kohaku appears and Himeko realizes she's a lesbian.
