Initially, to Orochimaru, Maori was essentially invisible or at least unimportant. He saw her in passing whenever he and Nawaki would go to Amaguriama, but he never gave her as much as anything other than a typical greeting. He did know that Nawaki was pretty sweet on her, but didn't recognize that Maori only had eyes for Orochimaru himself.
Maori had met Orochimaru on her first day working without her grandfather's help on the shop. Customer after customer came to her demanding sweets and soon she found herself overworked. The quality of her sweets were not up to par and many of the customers made it known that they were disappointed in the product. When Orochimaru and his student ordered from her, she found herself, once again, making sub-par sweets despite trying her best. After being berated by a customer, Orochimaru came up to her and kindly thanked her for the sweets and commending her for her hard work. Maori felt deep gratitude for Orochimaru for being so kind and never forgot his kindness. (What she didn't know was that Nawaki, the one who truly felt feelings for her, was the one who noticed her looking down and was too shy to approach her.)
After that, Moari put her all into her products and grew better and better with the hope of appealing to Orochimaru. She would offer he and Nawaki complementary snacks and would linger a tad bit longer when Orochimaru was around. One day after Nawaki confessed his feelings towards him, Maori rejected him and declared her affections towards Orochimaru. Although Nawaki was hurt, he respected her feelings and offered to help her achieve her love - dropping small hints to Orochimaru about Maori.
After Nawaki's death, Orochimaru remembered Nawaki informing him that Maori had romantic feelings for him. No longer having someone of interest to guide and take care of, Orochimaru humored her interest and began pursuing a romantic relationship with her. Maori became a treasured pet-like companion for Orochimaru, Maori none the wiser. Thinking that he was devoted to her, Moari allowed him to place a Cursed Seal of Devotion on her. This seal would influence her mind, forcing her to be devoted to him to matter what. What she thought was a promise of love would prove to be prison bars on her mind and consciousness.
Orochimaru would eventually secretly experiment on Maori after it was discovered that she was barren and could not have children of her own with him. Maori, always incapacitated during his experiments, was not aware that he was running tests and experiments on her. Orochimaru would succeed in creating a genetically modified fetus using her DNA and his own and would plant their child inside of Maori. From then on, he would continue monitoring his two experiments until their child was 2 years of age - when their child grew deadly ill.
Believing that his experiment had failed and having lost interest in Maori and wanting to focus on his own work, Orochimaru abandoned Maori and their sickly child. Moari was left waiting for her lover to return - remaining exclusively devoted to him in the process.
After having her seal suppressed by Anko using the Evil Sealing Method, Moari slowly began seeing that her former lover was not a good person and that he was using her and their child to further his own interest.
