Mei is like an older sister to Mio. The two of them are inseparable. To Mio, Mei is the reason why she is still alive, while to Mei, Mio is someone that makes her look forward to going back home.

心陽心 means "heart, mind, core." 陽 means "sun, positive, sunny."
Uchiha Mio, or Terumi Mio, is the younger sister of Uchiha Toji. She was a new Genin before the massacre, and once her family were killed, she ran away from Konohagakure. Mio was found by Terumi Mei in the Hidden Noodles Village, and since then the two of them lived together.

Mio’s life was simple. She had her parents and her brother that pampered her like she was the most precious being in the world. She joined the Academy around the same time as Itachi, and since both were Uchihas, they got along fairly well, even becoming best friends. Her life wasn’t chaotic, she didn’t dream big, even after the Nine Tails attack, she was just a free child, not caring about the happenings of the world.
She graduated from the Academy when she was 11 years old. She went on a few missions with her team, but nothing much of the ordinary. She was just a kid, a happy, free-spirited kid.
Until one night when she entered the Uchiha compound with her brother after dining out. A deep, strong smell of metal made her feel suffocated; and before she even realised what was going on, her brother covered her eyes and ran. She realised it wasn’t the direction to their house since she could go there with her eyes closed, and when she was finally allowed to see, they were far away from the Uchiha compound. ‘Go to Nara Shinya, you know who he is, right? I’ll come with mom and dad. Wait for us there.’
Mio wasn’t someone to go back on what her older brother said, she always listened; but that night she didn’t feel like listening. Something was wrong, she was aware of that, so she pretended to go there, waited for a while somewhere far enough from the compound so she wouldn’t be noticed, then went back at the crack of dawn.
She didn’t scream when she got home, she didn’t panic. She just watched her entire house covered in her parents blood then turned to leave. Mio had to find Toji. Her walk around the compound was interrupted by a sudden feeling of being followed. She only gasped a slight glance towards a body near the compound’s walls before she had to run. As she was running away, not exactly realising where she was going, she realised that the body she saw before running, was Toji, her older brother. The vivid image of her brother’s head devoid of eyes shook her to her core.
Mio ran for a week, barely stopping near places with water to drink and find something to eat quickly, before she started running again. She slept around 5 hours that whole week, her survival instincts keeping her awake. She didn’t notice when she passed the border to enter the Land of Noodles, however, once she did, she was finally able to calm down.
There, she met Terumi Mei, who, feeling pity towards Mio’s sorry state, decided to bring her to Kirigakure, where she more or less adopted Mio. The younger girl refused to tell Mei who she was or where she was coming from for months, until she was finally able to fully trust Mei. In order to keep her safe, Mei allowed Mio to use her last name, and advised her to use a disguise when people could see her.
Due to Mio refusing to be a Shinobi for Kirigakure, Mei had to find her a job around the village.
While she resided in Kirigakure as a normal citizen, Mio was able to train with Mei, also working on her new Mangekyou Sharingan. She was very careful at her job to not let anyone get close, even more so when she becomes an unofficial Shinobi once Mei becomes the Mizukage. It didn’t take long for her talent in battle or battle iq to be noticed by the elders of the village, who then made it clear that she would be allowed to stay in her position as an unofficial shinobi only if she would agree to being the Mizukage’s bodyguard.
During one of her missions outside Kirigakure, she met Shinya and Hiraku, as they were also assigned to the same mission as she was. Both of them realised almost immediately who she was (Shinya because that guy was way too smart for his own good, and Hiraku with the help of the Byakugan). They wanted to take her back to Konoha, saying that they thought she was dead, asking why she had to run away, but Mio refused instantly, saying she didn’t feel safe in Konoha anymore after what happened with her clan.
Upon hearing of Itachi’s death from Mei, Mio didn’t feel as happy as she thought she would feel. She asked Mei if she could go on a mission alone to find Sasuke and ask him a few things, because she expected him to know more than she did, since he lived in Konoha after the massacre. Mio found Sasuke after his fight with the eighth Jinchuriki. He was not that happy to see her, nor did he try to actually answer her questions, until she inevitably knocked him out for a couple of minutes. Once she learned the truth, she was, in fact, even more angry than she was before Itachi died. Mio had no idea what her next move should be, but she knew that she had to go back to Kirigakure to at least thank Mei for raising her.
Mio learned, once she was back from her solo mission, that Konoha was attacked by the Akatsuki and that the Fifth Hokage was unable to attend the new Kage Summit that was planned. Hearing that Danzo was the ‘new’ Hokage, she decided to join Mei on her journey and plan what to do once she saw him.
She helped Sasuke fight Danzo, and then went back to Kirigakure with Mei to prepare for the war. During the war, she finally was able to use her real name once again, and didn’t need to hide her Sharigan.
When the reanimated enemies started appearing, she took notice of Itachi’s chakra and followed after him. She stopped when she realised he was talking to Naruto, and only showed herself when Naruto went on his way. After a short conversation, Itachi revealed that Toji left his eyes with Itachi, so that when the time came, Mio would be able to use them and unlock her EMS. He said that the eyes were locked away in the Uchiha’s hidden room where they often held meetings, and only those with the Sharingan could enter.
After the war, she was allowed by the Mizukage to go and find her brother’s eyes, and with Sakura’s help, she was able to see again.
Although Danzo was dead, and the people of Konoha knew she was alive, she refused to go back to Konoha, believing that she simply didn’t belong there anymore. She stayed by Mei’s side until she resigned from the Mizukage position. Both of them started travelling across the continent and beyond after that.
